Earthquake? Just Save the Prada Shades

Recently, Singapore felt the earth moved. The earthquake at 6.6 is so great that practically everyone in Singapore felt it. The CBD area was greatly affected. Some office closed door and let employees go home early.

The first earthquake effect was felt in Singapore at 11:50am. I was on my way out shopping. So I missed the whole Singapore doing the "disco". The second one was felt at 2pm and I was in my son's school doing library duty. I missed that too. I don't envy those who felt it because the after-effect of the 'feeling' can last for a while. I have enough of it when I was staying at my last estate. We practically felt it every weekend. I get to know my neighbors because of all these evacuation while gathering at the car park. LOL.

The New Paper published an article written by it's columnist:

Earthquake?
Just save the Prada shades

LAST Tuesday, I witnessed the courage of Singaporeans.
For those of you who live at the bottom of the well (or in the east), you might not have felt the tremors which shook buildings in the CBD area as a result of the Sumatra earthquake.

I was in one such building at the time, and it was the first time I felt the ground under my feet move, in all my 39 years.

After looking around to see if Zhang Ziyi had accidentally walked into my office, I realised what it was when my colleagues screamed: 'Earthquake!'

It was then that I witnessed the bravery of my fellow citizens.

There was no panic exit or stampede as all the other tenants on my floor came out of their office.

Emergency procedures (learnt from disaster movies) demand that in the event of an earthquake, stairs should be used.

But not us brave souls who laugh in the face of danger.

No, we did what all fearless Singaporeans do - squeezed into the elevators.

At that point we had no idea if it was an earthquake or if the building was collapsing. But did we care?

Not even a little bit.

SARDINES IN A CAN

We just squeezed into the lifts like sardines in a tin. So calm were we that when the lift doors opened on the floor below us, my office manager had the presence of mind to tell them: 'Wait for the next lift! Don't overload this one.'

That made a lot of sense.

We naturally didn't want the lift to fall down the shaft, or worse, get stuck.

That was calm thinking in the face of disaster.

As we came out of the lifts, no one ran for their lives.

We were so unafraid that even though many of us thought the building might be collapsing, we just hung around in the lobby. Some of my female colleagues even said that it was a good opportunity to 'check out all the cute guys who work in the building'.

The rest of us, who didn't enjoy being checked out, decided to enter a cafe at the foot of another swaying building to get a cuppa.

After an hour, our building was certified safe and we headed back in.

This time, only one other colleague and I came back, while the rest did the reassuring task of buying lunch.

Five minutes after I sat down, the building swayed again. Similar scenes happened and I tried calling my lunch-buying colleagues, telling them not to return.

The female colleague, who I managed to get through to, said: 'Oh, can you go back in and get my bag for me?'

But I couldn't do that as I had forgot my access card.

So, while all of us left the building, my lunch-buying colleague and a friend of hers had the guts to go another way. There was a pair of Prada sunglasses waiting to be rescued.

They didn't even make a quick dash. While my colleague retrieved her sunglasses, her friend decided that it was a great time to go to the toilet since it would be empty.

Thirty years of Civil Defence training later, I can safely say that us Singaporeans are truly ready in the event of an emergency.

This is so true about Singaporeans that it's not funny. I feel that Singaporean has become complacent. We always rely on the government to do all the jobs for them. We are so spoon-fed that if the government doesn't say "evacuate", we will not do anything.

Like the CNY that just passed. I was out shopping for melon seeds. One of my favorite tidbits from CNY. I asked the shop vendor where did he get his melon seeds. He said "China." Before I could say anything, he said "Don't worry. This is Singapore. Very safe. The ministry is very strict." I guessed he said this to reassure his customers because we are all quite skeptical about the hygiene/safety level of Chinese products.

Black

Black is my favorite color.
Darkness is where I like to be in.
Black and White photographs drew my attention.
Antique intrigue me.
Winter is my favorite time of year.

I like to stay in a cold room like 16 degree Celsius, curtain drawn and thus darkness arises. Yes, I have 2 layers of curtain where the 2nd layer will block out 95% of lights. It practically has a night time effect if I draw the curtain properly.

I check out a Personality Test and this is what it says about my favorite color - black.
Black
Black is one of the most beautiful of colors and yet is the void of color too. It is the color of detail.

Black personalities want every thing done in detail. They are statistical and make good accountants. Internal Revenue Service agents probably like this color.
If a job needs finishing, these are the people to finish it. These personalities need leaders, though, to tell them what needs to be done.

Under guidance, they are able to get to the crux of the matter and solve very large problems. When put in a position to find the mistakes of others, they are right at home.

Loving puzzles, and finding others' mistakes brings out their tenacious spirits. Black personalities will sometimes intentionally find mistakes just so that they can repair them.

This color is one of holding things inside. When one wears black, they do not want to be touched. Putting a barrier between themselves and others is the purpose of this color.

Keeping their strength inside so that they can better protect their emotions is the effectiveness of this color. Although they want to be part of the world around them, they want no one to tug at their sensitivity.

Black is a relief color for most people, like "Mom's apple pie". It makes them feel comfortable and even, in some cases, makes them feel smaller, allowing them to hide from the sometimes cruel world.

That kind of sum of ME! LOL.

Why don't you check out your favorite color and see if it's true about you.

Am I Sick?

I kept 4 blogs.

This Food for Thoughts.
My favorite online game, Neopets - Me and my Brucey.
My Multiply Blog where I keep all my favorite stuff.
And lastly a private Blog where I vent my frustration, kept my inner thoughts.

Why do anyone needs so many blogs? No wonder the cyber world is congested.

I started my blog with the private one which wasn't private until I started venting my frustration about people I meet online, people I see on the street, and the people around me. I am still too timid to reveal my inner thoughts. I know the person (yes, there is one person I despised) I bitched about would never read my blog but I still don't have the gut to display my anger towards this bitch. Hahahaha... Anyway, I guess you can call me a hypocrite because I am not sincere in my feeling. However, I have since ignore this person. I do not make any pretense that I still 'listen' to her. Not that she is ever presence in a parent forum that I frequent regularly. LOL. Ok, I get angry easily. But she really drives me up the wall with her high and mighty and "everyone owe me" attitude and her "I am too sexy for this world" mentality.

The Neopet blog is all neopet related. So it would be kind of strange to have something non-neopet related stuff in there. So I decide to have another blog - this Food for Thoughts blog, where I talk about everything - everything I dare to share.

Then a friend started a Multiply account. I had opened one multiply account few months ago because a member of M4M has beautiful picture display in her Multiply account. So when Paw Paw started her multiply account, I decide why don't I put all my favorite things in there. And so the birth of my Whole Enchilada (name courtesy of pawpaw).

And so I contributed to the cyber world congestion. I couldn't help it. LOL.

Music I like

I just love music like this.

Vista

Just got a new computer. A Dell. The salesman at the counter at Suntec City told me it's the latest and the best configuration that I can get off Dell. Cost about $3k. Bought a printer for $90 and it will get you a speaker and web-cam. Though we have recently bought a HP 3-in-1 printer, that man of mine bought it too. Sigh... man...

Anyway, the computer was delivered shortly after Chinese New Year. My IT brother who visiting from Melbourne set it up. And I get to use it.

This new computer is using Microsoft VISTA.

I HATED it. I hate Vista. Reason? It's not competible with any of my equipment. The driver software for my HP printer, my web-cam, my newly bought Creative MP3, and the list goes on...

Luckily I could download the software driver for HP from their website and it work.
We tried Creative and though they have the files for us to download, but it doesn't work. Can you believe it? It doesn't work. I still have problem with the web-cam. Sigh... Sigh...

I was bitching why can't we use XP? Hubby's answer is New Computer = VISTA. That's what they give you. Sigh... And to think you need have a 2GB of Memory or something like that to operate a VISTA. And I get this?!

I hate to be the Guinea pig.

Okay, apart from this software incompatibility, I do like a few features about this VISTA.

Very APPLE

When I have firefox or IE or if I have a few tabs on, I can just place the mouse and see what website I have. Hahahaha!!! Like I can forget. LOL.

As I use this vista, I will continue to update what I like and dislike about it. Hopefully things will improve soon.

Who am I?

Every now and then I will ask myself "Who am I?"

On the surface, it's pretty easy to answer this question.

I was borned into a family who is neither poor, nor middle class, nor super rich. We are what you would classified as financially comfortable. This is because my father made a few good investments. Some may say we are rich because 1 have 5 uncles who are Datuks. However, you really can't said that either because I can't happily go out and happily buy myself a ferrari, or a high-end condominum in Orchard Road. We don't have a house in every major cities. We don't go holiday every chances we get. We can't retire. We still need to work. LOL.

Majority of my cousins worked in the family businesses. But there are another group of us who work for other people. 90% of us are no longer living in Malaysia where we were borned. We have all immigrated to England, USA, Singapore and Australia. And thus, we are never a close knitted family. We rarely meet. So my family is just my immediate family. That's my parents and my sibilings. We meet 2-3 times a year because we all stayed in different countries or cities.

My father is a rebel. He refused to comform to the norm. So when the Education system in Malaysia had a face lift in the late 80s, he packed us up and sent us to Singapore. I was 11 years old then.

11-16 - Lived and studied in Singapore
16-22 - Lived and studied in Hawaii, USA
22-28 - Lived and worked in Melbourne, Australia
28- now - back in Singapore

If you dig further in, I am a rebel like my father. I do not like things that's the norm. I do not care to follow everyone, follow the trend. I want to do me. I want to do thing that pleases me, that I like. And I usually do not like things that everyone like. I have to be different.

When all my cousins went to England after their 'O' level to continue their studies, I opted for Hawaii, USA. LOL.

I was the first in the family to quit my job when I had my son. I am still the only one in the family who is a SAHM. The rest of my female cousins are all superwomen with jobs in management level, either running their father's company or working in other establishement. Even my sister is a VP in some financial establishement.

Although I have the ability and capability to run a company which I had done before, I opted to laze around at home. I opted to have a carefree, stressless life.

After working for 5 years in the publishing industry, I am all stress out. My body was in ruined. My life was such a chaos. When there are convention, exhibition, I would be working in the office chasing after my desighers to meet deadlines. I can choose not to do so, but personally I feel that if I 'suffer' with them, they will work harder. And it has proven that my theory is right because 99% of my projects are delievered on time. However, that means that my life was all about work, work, and work. My longest track record was 48 hours of non-stop working. The designers get to go home and rest. I still have to go out to meet clients. And because I quarrel with the Admin boss, I was marked by him. Yes, I am fiery enough to scold my boss because he pushed one of my button the wrong way.

I still remembered that day. I think he nearly died of a heart attack. He has high blood pressure. Hahahaha! But it felt good because at that stage even until the day I resigned, I was untouchable. (Bragging mode: 6 months after I resigned, my boss called me to go back to work with more pay and a promotion.) I have the support of 3 other bosses. They needed me because the company major clients are all under my belt. My clients are the one who bring in the dough.

So you can say my son is my blessing. Because of him, I get to vegetate at home. I have no ambition right now. I do not want to be a superwoman. I want to be that "Little Woman" and let my hubby takes care of me.

Everyday my life revolves around my son. Hubby will send him to school. I will pick him up, go to all the enrichment classes that he has to attend. I also get to play my Neopet as and when I choose.

So how long am I going to be in this state? I don't know. I have volunteered in my son's school's parent support group and I get to work in the library once a week. I am going to start my quilt project again. I want to be able to continue to operate in this mode for a while.

So who am I? I don't know and I don't really care to find out. I am pretty content with whatever state I am in now. So I will just count my blessing and be thankful for what I have. All this is make possible because He Loves me, because I have His blessing. Thank you, Lord for loving me.

Can we ever go back?

I read something really logical from someone's blog. What she has written is too crude for me to put it here. So I will re-write it.

When you have sex, you can't go back just kissing
When you have kissed, you can'g go back to just holding hands
When you have held hands, you can't go back to just being friend

So when you divorced each other, can you go back to be friend?
The answer is of course NOT.
